I'll be the first to admit that when I first caught wind of Angry Birds Rio I didn't expect much. Video games based on movies are almost always universally terrible, and this seemed like a prime situation for Rovio do to a quick cash-in on Rio, with hype around the movie and Angry Birds in general making the game sell well anyway. Oddly enough, Angry Birds Rio is anything but a quick cash-in.

The next time somebody asks me why I love gaming on an iPhone, I am going to show them Angry Birds. For the sale price of just 99 cents (it's normally $1.99 — and still worth every penny), you get a funny little puzzler about flightless birds that attack egg-stealing pigs via a slingshot. The pigs hide in wooden, metal, and glass houses. Your power and trajectory determines the success of your birds' attacks. A direct hit at a critical weak point can bring an entire structure down on top of a pig's noggin, resulting in lots of pained oinks. It's very similar to Crush the Castle, a game I recently reviewed, but Angry Birds outstrips that addictive puzzler in personality.

Unbeknownst to most, ninjas are the sworn enemy of fruit. They have dedicated their lives to snuffing out any and all sources of vitamin C with their lethal blades. Seriously, that's the whole story behind Fruit Ninja, a wonderful single-minded game from Half Brick.

Nearly every console, handheld, computer, and mobile phone has seen a Tetris release “ if it's a piece of electronics, it can play Tetris. No other game has such widespread appeal. As such, it's without surprise that it arrives on a device that's drawing widespread attention. iPhone plays home to a new touch-enabled version of Tetris that looks nothing short of marvelous. Touch controls may not be the best fit for this classic puzzler, but the game still packs in plenty of fun.

Newtoy has a pretty sweet thing going with its burgeoning and addictive “Games With Friends” platform for the iPhone and iPod touch. The Dallas-based developer released Chess With Friends last year to much critical acclaim, including from me. Chess has improved substantially in the intervening months, and NewToy has reaped the fruits of that progress in its latest offering, Words With Friends.
